Countrywide Conflict Displacement

2016: The total number of individuals displaced by conflict in 2016 increased to 660,672, as joint assessment teams finalise assessments of those displaced last year. This remains the highest number on record, and a 40 per cent increase on the 470,000 displaced in 2015.

2017: 54,455 individuals have been verified as displaced, with 25 provinces recording some level of forced displacement.

Northern/North Eastern: Increasing tensions between two rival parties in Faryab have prompted some families to relocate to neighbouring provinces due to fears of new clashes. In Dara-e- Suf-e-Bala, Samangan, 1,050 people were reportedly displaced following an NSAG attack, while in Badakhshan, 16,905 individuals are estimated to have been displaced due to fighting in Jurm, Yamgan, Warduj, Raghistan, Yawan, Argo Fayzabad and Baharak. Assessments are planned for both provinces. In 2017 so far, 12,468 verified IDPs have been displaced from the region; approximately 23 per cent of the country total.

Southern: During the past week, clashes continued across the region causing displacements in Kandahar, Uruzgan and Hilmand, with over 7,000 individuals reportedly displaced in Hilmand alone. With the start of the poppy harvest, however, levels of fighting have dropped slightly in recent weeks. In 2017 so far, 25,146 verified IDPs have been displaced from the region; approximately 46 per cent of the country total.

Western: Consistent with previous weeks a number of high profile clashes were recorded between NSAGs and government forces in Farah, Badghis and Hirat provinces with tensions escalating between rival groups in Shindand district. No displacements have been reported to date.

Eastern: During the past week, ANSF operations supported by international military airstrikes took place in Nangarhar, Laghman and Kunar. Cross border shelling and artillery fire also continued in Khas Kunar and Lal Pur districts of Kunar and Nangarhar. No reports of civilian casualties or displacement have been received to date.

Central: Fighting intensified in several provinces across the region, including Logar, Paktya, Parwan and Kapisa, and reportedly displacing 1,400 individuals in Logar and 2,800 in Paktya. In Kabul 1,085 individuals were verified as conflict IDPs from Parwan, and 700 from Baghlan. In 2017 so far, 3,797 verified IDPs have been displaced from the region; approximately 7 per cent of the country total.
